Mission Friends

One of the early names for the Evangelical Covenant Church was mission friends, from their unifying verse, "I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts" (Psalm 119:63).  In a way, the RFIS running club members all become friends based on their unifying purpose, running toward the goal of being in shape enough to climb Mt. Cameroon.

We also have a commonality that makes our friendship somewhat obligatory - we fear God and follow his ways.  God is the unifying factor that trumps any pettier concerns.

This is not to say that life is an easy trek.  Neither is Mt. Cameroon.  One of the adults hiking the mountain had previously run several marathons.  He commented that this hike was MUCH more strenuous than just running a marathon.  I'll take his word for it, since I have little experience with either.

So as I train to follow God - it's not easy, but it's good.  I appreciate the encouragement of other runners in his race, especially seeing them strive valiantly.  I see my neighbor running, and it reminds me to exercise.  I experience another neighbor's hospitality, and it reminds me to also practice that.  It's the little things, and it's also the patient endurance of a persistent faith over decades.  Thanks to God for the fellowship of the body.

"And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.  To him be the power for ever and ever.  Amen." (1 Peter 5:10-11)
